Humpback whale conservation

13 Days

  • Assist with humpback whale conservation
  • Head out on whale surveys with marine biologists
  • Relax in the idyllic surroundings of Guludo Beach Lodge
  • Visit local communities and enjoy beach activities

Humpback whales need your help. Each year marine biologists in Mozambique collect data on these fascinating mammals to aid vital conservation work, and this is your opportunity to work alongside them. You'll stay in a tropical, barefoot beach paradise, where 12 kilometres of deserted powder-white sand separates the dazzling azure Indian Ocean from the wild African bush. You can immerse yourself in local culture, get involved with conservation, and enjoy this tropical paradise - not the kind of experience you get every day!

From July to early November, humpback whales pass through the azure waters of Quirimbas National Park on their annual migration route. Here you can often see mothers teaching their calves to spy hop, breach and tail slap. Each migration season marine biologists collect vital data on the whales, through digital photography, studying behaviour, GPS positioning and DNA collection.

Your stay at Guludo Beach Lodge not only helps to fund this work, but also offers a unique opportunity to get involved. Note: this is only a suggested itinerary, so you can add/subtract nights as you wish, and travel whenever you choose between July and October. You'll stay at Guludo Beach Lodge, whose spacious tented bandas have stunning views of the beach and ocean, and the prevailing ethos is a balance between relaxation and discovery.
