Description
The Massachusetts coastline of New England offers some of the best whale watching in North America. From your base in the picturesque waterfront town of Plymouth, this wonderful short break includes one full day whale watching boat trip, and one half day trip, in and around Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary with a WDCS researcher.
The cold nutrient-rich waters and productive fishing grounds of the Gulf of Maine attract whales in search of prey like sand lance, herring and mackerel. Every year from April to November, whales gather where the food is; Stellwagen Bank is so productive that in 1992 it was designated a national marine sanctuary. The humpback whales seen here are natural show-offs, and a favourite with whale watchers. Their spectacular behaviour inclues breaching, spyhopping, flipper slapping and lobtailing, plus their unique method of bubblenet feeding. There's also a possibility of encountering other marine wildlife, such as dolphin, porpoise, basking sharks, ocean sunfish, and a myriad of sea birds.
You'll also have free time to explore Plymouth's historic sites, learn about life in a 1627 Pilgrim village, and relive the Pilgrims' voyage across the Atlantic on a replica of the Mayflower II.
