Description
This holiday is packed with opportunities to see the exceptional wildlife of two contrasting regions of Scotland. The first part of the trip is based in the historic, conservation town of Cromarty, known as the jewel of the Black Isle, and one of the most beautiful small towns in the Highlands. You'll stay in a stunning converted 18th century brewery, just a stone's throw from the sea.
The nearby Moray Firth is home to one of the UK's three resident groups of bottlenose dolphins - as adopted by the WDCS - which you'll see on a boat trip on your first afternoon. Next day you'll drive a couple of hours to visit the WDCS Wildlife Centre at Spey Bay. Much closer to Cromarty, Chanonry Point is reputedly the best place in Northern Europe to watch dolphins from the shore. WDCS's field officer, Charlie Phillips, will give a talk about dolphins and share photography tips.
You then cross the Highlands to the lovely harbour town of Tobermory. The Isle of Mull is a spectacular place for wildlife - its waters are home to minke whale, harbour porpoise, Risso's and common dolphins, and occasionally orca! On your boat trips keep a weather eye out for basking shark, seal and otter too in the many bays and inlets. During a expertly guided land safari on Mull, you may spot deer, polecats and lizards, while the birdlife may include buzzards, sparrow hawks, sea eagles, golden eagles, puffins, owls, divers and grebes - to name but a few.
