Whale and Dolphin Watching in the Azores

Sperm Whale Tail, Azores

The mid-Atlantic archipelago of the Azores consists of a scattering of nine small islands, each of which is a haven of calm and tranquility, around two hours flying time from mainland Portugal. Due principally to their isolation - they lie roughly 1,500 kilometres from Lisbon - these lush, volcanic islands are still relatively untouched by tourism. The waters that surround them are home to an astonishing variety of whales and dolphins. No fewer than 26 species have been seen in recent years, and 6-8 species are normally seen on any one tour.
